At the regular meeting on Thursday, April 24, the Ridgefield City Council made history by appointing Elianna Galvan as the first youth representative to the Ridgefield Parks Board.
Boards and commissions serve an essential role in city government, providing community perspectives to City Council on a range of important issues. In December 2024, the Council amended the municipal code to allow for one youth member to be appointed to the Parks Board, ensuring that young residents have a voice at the table.
The selection process was competitive and rigorous, including a written application with a cover letter and recommendation, a blind screening by the City Council, and an interview.
“The candidate pool was very impressive,” said Mayor Cole. “I interviewed each of the candidates, and it was a really tough choice. We had some very unique, talented young people apply. The future is bright in Ridgefield.”
Mayor Cole nominated Elianna Galvan for the position, and her appointment was unanimously confirmed by the Council. Elianna, a junior at Ridgefield High School and a Running Start student at Clark College, is actively involved in seven different clubs, including iTUNA (International Teens Upholding Nature Association) and Unite Ridgefield, where she serves as an officer.
“I’m really thankful for this opportunity. I’ve been looking for more ways to get involved with Ridgefield outside of just my high school. I really want to try to have an impact.” Elianna told the Council after her appointment. “Thank you for appointing me.”
“We’re looking forward to what you will contribute to the Parks Board. Thank you,” Mayor Cole responded.
Elianna will serve as a voice for Ridgefield’s youth in advising the City Council on the development and operations of the city’s parks and trails system. She will hold the same rights and responsibilities as adult members of the Parks Board.

The Ridgefield Parks Board is made up of seven members, six adults and one youth, who advise the City Council on matters related to parks planning, land acquisition, operations, and maintenance within the current and future boundaries of Ridgefield.
