City of Ridgefield Building Division Observes Building Safety Month

City News Posted on May 02, 2024

The City of Ridgefield Building Division proudly announces its participation in Building Safety Month this May, an annual public awareness campaign led by the International Code Council (ICC) and its partners to promote building safety.

Building Safety Month serves as an opportunity to educate our community about the critical role that code officials, contractors, design professionals, and other industry stakeholders play in safeguarding the health, safety, and welfare of our residents. By adhering to building codes and regulations, we can mitigate risks, prevent accidents, and enhance the overall quality of construction projects.

"We are dedicated to promoting building safety and resilience in our community," said Michael Curtis, Building Official of the City of Ridgefield. "Building Safety Month provides us with a platform to reinforce the importance of hiring qualified contractors, obtaining proper permits, and maintaining buildings to ensure they remain safe and functional for years to come."

The City of Ridgefield Building Division encourages residents, property owners, and contractors to take the following steps during Building Safety Month and beyond:

Hire Licensed, Insured, and Bonded Contractors: When undertaking construction or renovation projects, always choose licensed, insured and bonded contractors. This provides assurance of competence and financial protection in the event of unforeseen circumstances.
Verify your contractor.

Obtain Proper Permits: Getting the proper permits before starting construction isn’t just a bureaucratic step - it’s your roadmap to safety and compliance. Obtain the proper permits before starting any construction, electrical, plumbing or HVAC project. Permits help ensure value by paying for professional plan review and inspection that verifies the work in your home is completed to building safety code.

Prioritize Regular Building Maintenance: Regular maintenance of buildings and structures is essential for preserving their integrity, functionality, and safety. Addressing maintenance issues promptly prevents minor issues from becoming major problems.

By following these guidelines, residents, business owners and contractors can contribute to the resilience and safety of our community's built environment. Building Safety Month serves as a reminder that everyone plays a role in promoting building safety and ensuring the well-being of our community.
