Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination

Illicit discharges are any unauthorized flows into the stormwater system that are not composed entirely of stormwater. These can include substances like motor oil, paint, sewage, wash water, or chemicals - many of which harm water quality and local wildlife.

Because stormwater is not treated before it flows into our streams and wetlands, identifying and stopping illicit discharges is critical to protecting our environment.

The City of Ridgefield is responsible for inspecting, detecting, and eliminating illicit discharges as part of our stormwater permit requirements. Our program includes:

  • Regular inspections of the stormwater system
  • Investigation of complaints and suspected discharges
  • Enforcement actions, when necessary, to stop and prevent pollution
  • Education and outreach to reduce accidental discharges

If you see or smell anything unusual - like cloudy water, strong odors, soap suds, or dumping near a storm drain - please report it right away. Timely reporting helps us take action quickly and prevent harm to our waterways.

Please complete the Spill & Stormwater Illicit Discharge Reporting Form or submit your reports to spillreporting@ridgefieldwa.us or by calling 360-887-6002.
